Mark says he always knew that budgeting was important. What he didn’t know, until he attended the LMN Plan for Profit Workshop, was that budgeting was the “key to his operations.” This realization came after searching endlessly for the right type of business support and guidance. After much searching and over 20,000 dollars in personal business consulting fees later, Mark was still without the guidance he wanted. “I had consultants come into the office with all their ideas only later to start building charts from scratch and I knew right away: forget it! This costs way too much and I kicked them out! The next year I heard of LMN through Landscape Ontario. The seminar was 100 bucks, so I thought I had nothing to loose. At that point, I was at my wit’s end.”
Solution:
It was at the LMN workshop that Mark realized the power of budgeting. “I couldn’t believe what I learned in the workshop,” he declares, “I had never come across this kind of insight. Accountants are more about looking back,” he explains. “Budgeting is about piecing it all together and planning forward. Once you know your budget, you’re pricing from an angle that allows you to see where you’re at and progress forward.” Mark explains that before he jumped on the budgeting bandwagon, he was following a unit pricing system, under which there is an element of “just hoping for the best.”
Once Mark started his budget, he switched his pricing system to a cost-based one (based on a budget). “I’ll never do unit pricing again,” he insists. “It’s working backwards!” On the other hand, Mark says, “When you have a budget, you’re in the ‘know.’ You can say this is the way we planned it.” While Mark acknowledges that there will always be an aspect of “estimating”, like how long a project will take or how many machine hours, etc., he believes that once you get a feel for your business, familiarize yourself with the numbers and start to see somewhat of a general pattern, you know what an accurate forecast for your business is. “It’s accurate because you’re actually measuring it!” he adds. “And everyone becomes part of the process.”
Business Benefits:
Since attending the LMN workshop, Mark has created two annual budgets. The first one was built in the course, the second in two sittings of about 3 hrs. It was exciting to create his own budget and really understand his numbers. But Mark says now it’s even more exciting to actually get into it, grab hold of the tools and really make use of the system. He even has further plans for change this year.
